Abstract
A non-magnetic austenitic steel which has a yield point of at least 35 tons per square inch after precipitation hardening has a composition within the following range in per cent by weight: C 0.37-0.9, Si 0.2-2.0, Mn 6.0-35.0, Ni not greater than 12.0, Cr 8.0-25.0, V 0.5-4.0, the total quantity of these elements not exceeding 45 and the Si and V contents being together not less than 1.0, Fe and impurities the remainder. The alloy may also contain one or more of the following, up to 15.0 in total, Mo up to 5.0, W up to 5.0, Ti up to 5.0, Nb and/or Ta up to 5.0, Al up to 2.0, Zr up to 2.0, Be up to 2.0. Co up to 20.0, N up to 0.25 and B up to 0.5 may also be present. Heat treatment may comprise solution treatment at 1000-1300 DEG C. and precipitation treatment at 300-950 DEG C. The Provisional Specification describes also alloys in which the minimum C content is 0.3 and in which Cu may optionally be present up to 6.0.
