Abstract
803,507. Forging nuts; working at specified temperatures. LOOS, C., LOOS, W., and SCHMIDT, L., [trading as LOOS & SCHMIDT]. March 25, 1957 [Oct. 5, 1956], No. 9789/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XII] A method of making nuts comprises cutting off blanks from round stock, cold upsetting the blanks, heating the latter to 600‹ to 800‹ C. and pressing them to indented polygonal shape. Steel stock 6 in the form of rods or preferably from a reel 1, Fig. 5, is drawn through a draw bench 2 and passes into a first press 3 where it is sheared into individual blanks by a knife d, Fig. 1 (not shown). The blanks are then cold upset between punches f, g, Fig. 2 (not shown), and drop on to a conveyer 7 which takes them to a hopper 11, Fig. 6, leading into a furnace 4. The blanks 13 are fed sequentially down a passage and on to a feed rail 14 from which they are pushed in steps by a reciprocating plunger 15 actuated by a rotary cam 21 driven in synchronism with the finishing press. The furnace is of the counter-current type and has a rotating drum 22 with an internal worm 23 which conveys the blanks through the furnace from which they drop down a shoot 9, Fig. 5, into a finishing press 5 which may be a horizontal or vertical crank press. Means 29, 31, 32 maintain the furnace temperature constant. The shoot includes means for aligning the heated blanks and also has a by-pass shoot 34, Fig. 7 (not shown), for diverting the blanks from the press 5. The discs have then a temperature between 550-750‹ C. and are first pressed into polygonal shape n by a punch k, Fig. 3, in a die m and both faces are indented by piercing tools o, p. In a further operation a wad r, Fig. 4 (not shown), is punched out. The press tools are water-cooled and the press die m is further cooled by an air jet which supplies an atomized lubricant. The nut blanks may be finally tempered using their residual heat.
