Abstract

803,499. Cable insulation. RHEE ELASTIC THREAD CORPORATION. July 27, 1956 [Jan. 3, 1956], No. 23218/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 36. [Also in Group IX] An electric conductor is insulated by a covering thread which, even when decomposed by heat, will leave an effective dielectric residue. The thread comprises a continuous core of one or more filaments of a silicone rubber, e.g. cured polydimethyl siloxane, and a sheath therefor of glass fibres. The sheath may comprise one or more glass threads wound, wrapped or braided about the core, e.g. two glass threads are wound helically around the core in opposite directions, one over the other. The glass fibre may be coated with abrasive-resistant materials such as a silicone, polyurethane resin, polytetrafluoroethylene or polytrifluorochloroethylene and/or the finished sheath may be so coated. One or more covering threads may be applied to a conductor by winding, wrapping or braiding, e.g. a conductor of tinned copper, iron, nichrome, aluminium, silver, or platinum has a flexible insulation covering formed by helically wrapping two threads thereon, one over the other and in opposite directions. The threads may be applied to a conductor before or after other wrapped or extruded sheaths or coatings of insulating materials such as varnish, rubber or synthetic resin. Specifications 542,655, 544,143, 575,667, 586,187, 594,485, [all in Group IV], 618,451 and 651,543, [both in Group IV (a)], are referred to.
