Abstract
In preparing a higher viscosity siloxane from a lower viscosity cyclic siloxane of the formula [(CH3)2SiO]n, wherein n is at least 3, or a mixture of siloxanes containing at least 50 per cent by weight of the cyclic dimethylsiloxane, the remainder of the mixture being a cyclic siloxane of the formula [R.R1SiO]m, wherein R is methyl, ethyl or phenyl, R1 is ethyl or phenyl, and m is at least 3, with or without intercondensed monomethylsiloxane and/or trimethylsiloxane in amount such that the R/Si ratio is within 1.9 to 2.01, solid tetramethyl- or benzyltrimethyl - ammonium hydroxide in amount of from 0.004 to 0.2 per cent (by weight of the siloxane(s)) is added to the siloxane or siloxane mixture and the resulting mixture is heated, e.g. to within the range 75 DEG to 130 DEG C. After the desired degree of polymerization has been obtained, the product is heated to above 150 DEG C. to decompose the rearrangement catalyst. Examples are given. Uses.-Gels obtained by the invention may be used as potting gels in high temperature electrical apparatus; gums obtained by this invention may be compounded with a filler, e.g. silica aerogel and benzoyl peroxide to form rubbers for use as wire insulation and gasket material.
