Abstract

Melamine is prepared by heating a mixture of hydrogen cyanide and ammonia in the vapour phase at a temperature of 400-750 DEG C. (preferably 450-600 DEG C.) and at substantially atmospheric pressure in the presence of a dehydrogenation catalyst comprising an oxide of chromium and/or a metal of Group VIII of the Periodic System. Specified catalysts are chromic oxide, platinum, palladium, nickel, cobalt or mixtures thereof. Specified supports are silica gel, alumina, pumice, fuller's earth, kieselguhr, kaolin and charcoal. The chromium oxide catalyst may contain 5 per cent of stabilizing agents such as difficultly reducible oxides of zirconium, titanium, silicon, thorium, boron or magnesium, light reducible oxides of tellurium or beryllium, or chromoxide gel. The mol. ratio of hydrogen cyanide to ammonia is preferably at least 1:1 and more preferably from 1:4 to 1:10. In the examples melamine is prepared by passing a mixture of vaporized hydrogen cyanide and ammonia through an electrically heated quartz tube containing a bed of catalyst consisting of activated alumina impregnated with chromic oxide, platinum, nickel or cobalt. The melamine may be subsequently converted to the picrate or oxalate.
