Abstract
In the manufacture of shaped articles, e.g. filaments or films, from viscose, there is added to the viscose, prior to extrusion, a water-soluble compound containing one or more alkylene oxide chains (other than one having the formula set out in Claim 1 of Specification 794,780), the quantity of the compound added being 0.5-10 per cent by weight of the cellulose in the viscose and at least one alkylene oxide chain in said compound containing at least 5 alkylene oxide groups. The added compound may have the general formula <FORM:0803089/IV (a)/1> where R is an alkyl group containing 6-18 carbon atoms and the sum of x and y is 6-50, or alternatively it may be a mercaptan wherein the hydrogen atom attached to the sulphur atom is replaced by a polyalkylene oxide chain. Specified addition compounds are "Carbowax" and "Ethomid" C/15, C/20 and C/25 (Registered Trade Marks), the products obtained by reacting a ,b - dimethyl glycerol, a - methyl glycerol, glycerol, N-ethyl cyclohexylamine, cyclohexylamine, dodecyl mercaptan, cyclohexanol, pentaerythritol and triethanolamine with excess ethylene oxide, and polyethylene oxide itself.
