Abstract
803,036. Electric incandescent lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 8, 1956 [Oct. 14, 1955; Nov. 3, 1955], No. 30591/56. Class 39(2) An electric incandescent lamp is provided with a coiled coil filament 4 arranged along the longitudinal axis of the bulb 1 and connected to leading-in wires 5, 6 which are of different lengths and extend on opposite sides of the bulb axis, with their respective ends 9, 10 bent inwardly towards the axis, the parts of the leading- in wires adjacent to their joints with the ends of the filament being mechanically and insulatingly connected by a rigid bridge 12-14 and forming, with the filament, a mount structure or unit which is correctly located and not subject to distortion when subjected to vibration or shock. As shown in Fig. 1, the bridge comprises two lengths of wire 12 and 13 aligned and interconnected by an intermediate insulating member 14, preferably a glass bead or button, into which their ends are fused. Right-angled bends are provided in the wires 12, 13 to enable them to be offset in a plane at right angles to the leading-in wires 5, 6 when connected to the parts 9, 10 thereof. Preferably a further support is provided by a wire 15 located between the mid-point of the filament and the bead 14. A heat-deflecting disc 11 may be supported in known manner on the stem press 7 of the lamp. In a modification, Fig. 2, a supplementary brace wire 16 has one end welded to the longer leading-in wire 6 and the other end anchored loosely within a hollow glass arbor 17 projecting from the stem press 7. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the supports for the insulating bridge comprise integral continuations of the leading-in wires 5, 6, the ends of the filament being gripped within loop portions 9<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>1</SP> formed in the respective leading-in wires. This last arrangement may be effected in progressive stages in an automatic machine.
