802,845. Valves. WESTINGHOUSE AIR BRAKE CO. Aug. 10, 1956 [Aug. 15, 1955], No. 24549/56. Class 135. A cylindrical slide valve 16 carrying an 0- ring 20 is movable over one or more ports 22 in a bore 21 in which the valve slides, and according to the invention damage to the 0- ring by the edges of the ports is avoided by limiting the size of the ports, the width of each port 22 measured along the circumference of the bore 21 being less than half the undistorted section diameter of the O-ring. As shown, a plurality of coplanar circular ports 22 open into a groove 23 in a sleeve 7, the groove communicating with a port 24 in the valve casing 4. Further ports 12, 13 in the valve casing communicate with radial ports in the sleeve 7 so that movement of the valve 16 to left or right of the ports 22 connects the port 24 either with the port 13 or with the port 12. The movement of the valve is limited by stop elements 28, 29 engageable respectively with a cap 6 and an end wall 5 of the casing 4. Instead of being circular, one or each of the ports 22 may be elongated axially of the bore 21. The O-ring 20 is located, with clearance, between annular ribs on the valve 16. Minimum and maximum values are specified for the radial distortion of the ring 20 in relation to its section diameter.
