Abstract
802,706. Pneumatic tyres. GOODRICH CO., B. F. May 16,1956 [May 31,1955], No. 15231/56. Class 144 (2). To provide an adequate rubber covering of the carcass plies in the bead area of a pneumatic tyre, a chafer strip 19<SP>1</SP> of partially vulcanized rubber is applied around the tyre beads during building of the tyre and before the final moulding and curing of the tyre, the chafer strip being pre-vulcanized only to a degree wherein it has between one third and three quarters of the tensile strength it possesses when fully vulcanized, and wherein it will adhere directly to the uncured rubber of the tyre lining 111, the carcass ply 18<SP>1</SP> and the sidewall covering 20<SP>1</SP>, but will resist flow under the moulding conditions of the tyre. The strip 191 may extend, as shown, from the bead toe to the axially outer side of the bead, so that for tubeless tyres, sealing ribs 331 may be moulded therein, or may extend from the bead toe to the bead heel only. The strip may be employed either with the conventional ply-turnover arrangement of Fig. 5, or the " tubeless " arrangement shown in Fig. 6.
