Abstract
801,966. Transducers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Aug. 2, 1956 [May 20, 1955], No. 14585/55. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXXIX] A transducer comprises a piece of indium antimonide material caused to move relative to a non- uniform magnetic field. The transducer may utilize either the Hall effect or the magneto-resistance effect. As shown, a device for measuring small displacements comprises a stylus S capable of moving the magnetic gap NS relative to two pieces of indium antimonide C, C<SP>1</SP> so arranged that as the field through one increases, that through the other decreases. Relative changes in their resistances are measured by the galvanometer G in the diagonal arm of a Wheatstone bridge. In a further embodiment a device for measuring. surface roughness comprises a piece of indium antimonide movable relative to a magnetic field, the indium antimonide being fed with A.C. for modulation by the changes in semiconductor resistance. A microphone using the Hall effect is also described (see Group XXXIX].
