Abstract
801,854. Agricultural drainage. HAWES, S. M. Feb. 11, 1957 [Feb. 10, 1956], No. 4244/56. Class 33. [Also in Group XXXIII] In a land drainage system water is delivered from one side of a parting wall 8, e.g., a sluice between waters, to another side, by means which operate independently of the rise and fall of the waters and which are supported by a pontoon 1 on one side, moored so as to rise and fall with the level of the water, and water is drawn by said means, namely a pump 2, through one or more intake openings 3 and discharged through an outlet pipe 6 to a delivery pipe 19 connected to a wall pipe 2 on or passing through, the parting wall 8, irrespective of the level at which the pontoon floats, Figs. 3, 4 and 6. The pump 2 is preferably of low head high capacity and is driven by an electric motor. The pontoon 1 may be attached to the wall 8 by a mooring pole and a universal joint, whereby it may rise or fall. Discharge may be into an existing sluice channel. The delivery pipe 19 is pivotally connected in line with the wall pipe 12. To keep afloat the pontoon end of the pipe 19 when it is full of water, the pontoon is sufficiently weighted at the opposite end. The pipe 19 may be supported on a separate float. The duct leading from the intake opening(s) is narrowed to a waist at the pump inlet. The delivery pipe 19 can have a pivotal connection at each end, as in Figs. 3 and 6, which consists of flexible hose 22, 28, and at one end, in Fig. 6, a pivot pin 24 on a coupler rod 23 (duplicatable) fixed by a ring flange 25 to the pipe 19, and fitting into a slot 27 in an anchor bracket 26 on the pontoon. At the opposite end there is a universal joint connection around the hose 28 comprising a coupler rod 29 (on a ring flange on the pipe 19), which may be duplicated, having a pivotal connection 30 to a ring 31 rotatable about pivots 32 carried by a cage 33 formed in two halves with clamping rings 34 secured about the pipe 12 by mating flanges 35. The cage 33 may be mounted on a roller bearing 36 on a sluice gate 37. In another form with a different delivery member the latter forms a vertical leg having a tray supported above the pontoon and projecting over its end so that in operation the delivery end of the tray projects over or on to the wall. Fig. 11 shows a pontoon 1a in the form of a modified tubular storage tank in which the wall end of the delivery member 19 is pivotally connected to the pipe 12 by a pin and slide arrangement for a universal joint around flexible hose 28. The inlet duct has an intake extending across the pontoon 1a and above the water line, the intake mouth(s) having a slidable grating 51 hanging from lugs and held by a seating 53 over the intake mouth(s). Catwalks 56 and 57 may be provided, with step rungs 58 between them. A water guide vane or vanes may be mounted in each pivotal connection to guide the water in a streamline manner. A supporting strap may be mounted to engage under the flexible hose 22, 28 to prevent sagging. Modifications of the pipe couplings are referred to.
