Abstract

Epoxide resin compositions suitable for use in the fabrication of quasi-metallic articles, e.g. screws, tools, jigs, dies, moulds, moulded articles, models, work-holders, &c., consist of a minor proportion of a polymerizable epoxy resn, a major proportion of finely divided metal and a minor proportion of a thickening agent which maintains the metal particles in suspension in the resin. The finely divided metal should comprise at least 45 per cent of the mixture and may consist of steel, iron, copper, &c., in the form of shavings, wires, foils, particles, &c. The thickening agent may be amorphous silica as obtained by the vapour phase hydrolysis of silicon tetrachloride or tetrafluoride, or finely divided carbon black. The epoxide resins are those obtained by the condensation of an epihalogenhydrin and bisphenol. They may be mixed with curing agents, e.g. a mixture of diethylene triamine and a polyamide obtained by reaction of polymerized unsaturated fatty acids with aliphatic polyamines, e.g. ethylene diamine. Other polymers may be used, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, polysulphide polymers and rosin amines. When used for moulding a mould release agent may be added, e.g. dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium bentonite. Preferable proportions are 70 per cent metal, 24 per cent epoxy resin and 5 per cent thickener.ALSO:Epoxide resin compositions suitable for use in the fabrication of quasi-metallic articles, e.g., screws, tools, jigs, dies, moulds, moulded articles, models, work-holders &c. consist of a minor proportion of a polymerizable epoxy resin, a major proportion of finely divided metal and a minor proportion of a thickening agent which maintains the metal particles in suspension in the resin. The epoxide resins are those obtained by the condensation of an epihalogenhydrin and his phenol. They may be mixed with curing agents, e.g., a mixture of diethylene triamine and a polyamide obtained by reaction of polymerized unsaturated fatty acids with aliphatic polyamines, e.g., ethylene diamine. Other polymers may be used, e.g., polyvinyl acetate, polysulphide polymers and rosin amines. When used for moulding a mould release agent may be added, e.g., dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium bentonite. Preferable proportions are 70 per cent metal, 24 per cent epoxy resin and 5 per cent thickener.
