Abstract

Polyvinyl acetate emulsions prepared by emulsion polymerization in the presence of partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate or hydroxy ethyl cellulose comprise a g -acylaminopropyldimethyl-a -hydroxyethyl ammonium di-hydrogen phosphate, the acyl radical being saturated or unsaturated and containing 12 to 18 carbon atoms, in amount sufficient to produce a positive charge on the dispersed polyvinyl acetate particles and to form a stable emulsion in conjunction with the emulsifier. The preferred phosphate is g -stearylaminopropyldimethyl-b -hydroxy ethyl ammonium dihydrogen phosphate. The phosphates may be incorporated before polymerization or, when partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate is used as emulsifier, to the polymer emulsion. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of a potassium persulphate/sodium sulphite redox system, part of the vinyl acetate being introduced during polymerization, and part of the persulphate being added and the temperature raised when polymerization is substantially complete. The emulsions deposit polyvinyl acetate on pulp fibres when mixed with paper pulp without the addition of coagulants. U.S.A. Specification 2,500,122 is referred to.
