Abstract
801,442. Transistors. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 5, 1956, No. 27111/56. Class 37. A method of making a transistor comprises the steps of placing a gold-coated metal body in contact with the surface of a semi-conductor body and passing an electric current sufficient to melt the gold through the metal body to fuse it to the semi-conductor. In the embodiment, indium pellets 2, 3 are fused to opposite faces of a slice of N-type Ge 1 by the method described in Specification 801,443, which is divided from the present Specification, to form a germanium PNP junction body. A base contact 7 in the form of an open circle of gold-plated molybdenum wire flash-plated with antimony is attached to the Ge slice 1 by passing a current sufficient to melt the gold between a pair of probe electrodes 18, 19 placed at the ends of a diameter of the circle (Fig. 2). Leads 4, 5 of platinum or other noble metal are then applied as described in Specification 801,444, the subject-matter of which has been divided from the present Specification. In an alternative embodiment, comprising a P-type base body to which antimony or lead antimony alloy beads are fused, no antimony is plated on the base contact.
