Abstract

Hydrocarbon fractions boiling within the range 110-250 DEG F. are hydroformed over a platinum-group metal on alumina at 800-975 DEG F. and below 125 p.s.i.g. to produce a hydroformate having an octane number (research clear) of about 80, and the liquid hydroformate is solvent extracted to produce an aromatic-rich extract and an aromatic-poor raffinate which latter is recycled to the hydroforming zone. The hydroforming is preferably carried out as described in Specification 796,310. Solvents which may be used are lactones, 2-pyrrolidone, adiponitrile, dimethylsulphoxide, furfural, phenol and sulphur dioxide, butyrolactone being preferred. Temperatures of 50-500 DEG F. and sufficient pressure to maintain the liquid phase, e.g. 15-750 p.s.i.g. may be used employing 0.5-3 volumes of solvent per volume of hydroformate. Batch mixing and settling or continuous countercurrent extraction techniques can be employed, and the solvent can be recovered by fractionation, cooling or by adding water.
