[Also in Group XXIX] A building, e.g. a large metal tank, is erected ring by ring by hydraulic or screw lifting jacks 4, inserted and attached at the top or acting near the top of the first ring and so that operation cause the jacks and attached ring to climb up their long ram rods 15 the first assembled ring being lifted the height of the plates of one ring so that the plates of the second ring can be welded to the bottom edge of the raised first ring to hang freely therefrom. In Fig. 1, a roof 3 is assembled on wall plates 2 at ground level. Four jacks 4 are then attached to the ring of wall plates 2 and are coupled to a central pump 5. The jacks are supported on legs 25 connected to a base plate, and they are steadied by inclined optional stays 26. In Figs. 1 and 2, the jacks 4 are attached to the roof 3 which has been assembled on the first ring 2 of wall plates assembled on the welded bottom plates 1 of the base. The jacks have long ram thrust rods 15 which are stiffened by being guided through U-shaped fittings 29 welded at spaced intervals to the inner wall 2. The rods 15 also reach down through the tube or angle 25, Fig. 2, of a trestle 25-26 resting on the base. The thrust rods 15 are replaceable by longer rods as the height of the tank or building proceeds. Thereby the roof and attached depending ring walls are lifted as a whole to the height for welding on another ring wall and so on. When a new ring of wall plates 2 is being assembled the plates of the wall may be gripped in the jaws of a clamp 38, Fig. 6, which can slide up on the angular post 25 of a steadying trestle 25, 26, several trestles being located round the periphery. Thereby twisting or displacement of the ring is prevented. When such ring is raised by the clamp, &c. 38 it is held in position for welding by attachment and the clamp 38 is unscrewed and slid down on 25 for the succeeding ring. Each trestle leg 25 has a height adjusting screw 35.
