Abstract
800,600. Pressurized helmets. QUILTER, J. R. C., and REEVES, H. Q. A. Sept. 29, 1950 [Sept. 30, 1949; Feb. 17, 1950], Nos. 25114/49 and 4109/50. Class 81 (2). A pressurized helmet for aviators comprises a flexible oxygen proof liner 11 having a frontal opening 12 with a beaded edge 14, a flexible covering 15 having a frontal opening 16, and a mask 25 with a window 26. Oxygen passes in through the tubes 29 and 30 to the distributing tube 32, and by its pressure causes the edge 14 to be pressed against the face of the wearer and also fills the space 17. Carbon dioxide is exhaled through the valve 34. The liner 11 and the cover 15 are cut away at the top, being joined by adhesive tape 19, a panel 20 being inserted to equalize the pressures on the top and bottom of the helmet. A slit is provided at the back of the helmet, a join in the liner 11 and the covering 15 being made on each side of the slit. A nylon or like covering 39 protects the cover 15 and has a lacing or other fastening means for a back slit. A microphone mouthpiece 35 and earpieces 36 are provided. The space 17 may be divided into compartments by rubber partitions, the stream of oxygen passing through the compartments in series. An internal breathing mask which fits over the nose and mouth and is integral with the mask 25 may be provided. The oxygen inlet or inlets may be in the neck portion.
