Abstract

An internal combustion engine fuel comprises a gasoline and 5 to 1000 parts per million of an N-alkyl substituted alkylene diamine having at least one alkyl group of at least 10 carbon atoms. The N-alkyl substituted alkylene diamine has the formula: <FORM:0800418/III/1> wherein each R is hydrogen or an alkyl group, at least two R's being hydrogen atoms and at least one R is an alkyl group containing 10 to 30 carbon atoms, and R1 is an alkylene group containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms and a straight chain of no more than 4 carbon atoms the ends of which are directly linked to the two nitrogen atoms. In examples compositions contain N-lauryl - 1,3 - propanediamine, N,N - didecyl-1,2 - ethanediamine, N - dodecyl - N1 - ethyl1,3-propanediamine, and mixtures of mono-N-alkyl substituted 1,3-propylenediamines wherein the alkyl groups are derived from coconut oil fatty acids or tallow oil fatty acids. Other suitable compounds are 3-laurylamino-1-butylamine, N,N1 - didecyl - 1,3 - propane diamine, N - octadecyl - 1,3 - propanediamine, N - hexadecyl - 1,2 - ethanediamine, N - oleyl - N1-dodecyl - 1,3 - propanediamine, N - hexadecyl-N1 - methyl - 1,2 - propanediamine, and N-decenyl - N1 - secondarybutyl - 1,3 - propanediamine. The compositions may also contain synthetic lubricants, such as mixtures of polyoxa-hydrocarbons, tetraethyl lead, iron carbonyl, dicyclopentadienyl iron, xylidene, N-methyl aniline, ethylene bromide, ethylene dichloride, tricresyl phosphate, alkyl boronic acids, N,N1 - disecondarybutylphenylene diamine, N - n - butyl - p - aminophenol, 2,6 - ditertiarybutyl - 4 - methylphenol, N,N1 - disalicylal-1,2-propanediamine and polymerized linoleic acid.
