Abstract
800,139. Perforating. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. April 30, 1957 [May 23, 1956], No. 13744/57. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXI] Apparatus for punching a sample from moving strip, e.g. issuing from a rolling stand, consists of a sharp-edged apertured die 9 positioned on one side of the strip 1 and a cutting charge of a high velocity detonating explosive 14 positioned on the other side of the strip 1, the shape and dimensions of the charge and the aperture in the die corresponding to those of the required sample. The charge (see Group XXI) is mounted on a holder 13 within a housing 3 attached by an arm 4 to a support 6, which also carries an arm 5 supporting the die 9. The punched sample is driven into the die against the action of a spring-loaded piston 10 when the charge is electrically fired. Both arms 4 and 5 may be moved together or in a modification the charge is fired automatically when the arms are brought into alignment.
