Abstract

809,531. Fluid-actuated valves. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 4, 1955 [Nov. 5, 1954], No. 32150/54. Class 135. A constant mass flow air valve which keeps, for a given air temperature, mass flow constant irrespective of air pressure, has a spring-loaded piston 7 exposed at one side, e.g. on the righthand side within the shell B, to the pitot pressure at the valve entrance 2 acting in the opposite direction to the spring loading, e.g. via filter A, the other side of the piston being exposed to the pressure in a cylinder 5 communicating through a restriction C with the valve entrance, and through an adjustable bleed F with the atmosphere, and a valve closure member 15 connected to the piston. The bleed operates under choked conditions and is controlled by a solenoid-actuated needle valve 28 whereby two sizes of the bleed give two distinct rates of mass flow. One spring or, in order to reduce the length of the valve, two springs may be used, one 11 operating after the other 12 has been compressed a given amount.
