Abstract

808,854. Presses for separating liquids from solids. WILLIAMS, W. P. (Bauer Bros., Co.). March 21, 1956, No. 8872/56. Class 46. [Also in Group VIII] In pulping fibrous material such as wood chips, the material is digested in steam and liquor containing chemicals in a digester and, immediately thereafter, subjected to successive squeezings in a screw-press to remove, for example, 70 per cent. of the liquor. The screwpress comprises a cage 27, Fig. 3, having bars 28, between which liquor can escape, and a sleeve 38, Fig. 2, rotatably mounted on a driven shaft 43, to which is secured a second sleeve 39. The sleeve 38 is separately driven, as by a pulley 45, preferably faster than the sleeve 39. The sleeves have helical threads 41 and 42. The sleeve 39 is formed with frusto-conical parts 46. Projections 52 and 51 extend into the cage to form, between it and the sleeve 39, chambers 48 of relatively large clearance separated by constricted passages. Material enters the screwpress through an inlet 31 and leaves through an outlet 32 controlled by a sleeve 33.
