808,806. Gas filters. SAUNDERS, S. Dec. 23, 1955 [Nov. 15, 1954 ; Feb. 3, 1955], Nos. 27613/54 and 3255/55. Class 8(2). [Also in Group XXVII]. A filter for removing noxious gases and solid particles from the exhaust of an I.C. engine comprises a casing 1, Fig. 1 secured at one end 4 to the exhaust pipe 6 so as to extend axially thereof and containing a plurality of sequentially arranged filtering elements successively traversed by the exhaust gases. Granular or fibrous media 10 is housed in separate replaceable cup-shaped containers 9 having perforated bases 11 ; those of one base being offset in relation to those of the base of an adjacent container to provide uniform gas flow and to assist silencing. In a modification the containers are axially spaced by means of pressed grooves in the tubular wall of the casing and a relief valve at the inlet end sounds an alarm when the containers become choked. Suitable filter media include cotton waste, lambs wool, kapok horsehair, glass wool, granulated charcoal and wire wool and may be graded with the coarser medium at the inlet end. In a further modification a pluraility of ceramic baffles 18, Fig. 6, having cut-away portions or staggered apertures are spaced along a tubular casing 19. The baffles may be coated with oil.
