Abstract

Tetracyclinonitrile is prepared by reducing chlor- or brom-tetracyclinonitrile by hydrogenation in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, preferably a palladium charcoal catalyst and an inert organic solvent such as 2-ethoxyethanol. Preferably a tertiary amine base such as triethylamine or pyridine should be present. When the take-up of hydrogen ceases, the catalyst is filtered off and ethanolic hydrochloric acid is added until the pH drops to 3.0 to 3.5, the tetracyclino-nitrile crystals which separate being removed. Specification 808,702 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 766,512.
