Abstract
808,057. Pencils. EAGLE PENCIL CO. May 3, 1957 [May 18, 1956], No. 14213/57. Class 146(3) In a lead pencil of the type comprising a shaft and a burnishing cap at one end thereof, the burnishing cap consists of a plate of relatively smooth. hard material having a keying structure extending downward from its periphery into notches in the end of the shaft, the plate being securely bonded to the shaft. As shown, the cap H, which may be made of metal or a non-hygroscopic plastic e.g. polystryene, is hexagorial to fit on the rear end of a pencil having a wooden shaft C of hexagonal cross-section, the upper surface 15 of the cap is rounded so as to be suitable for smoothing the drawing paper after erasure. Three prongs 16 of triangular cross-section and tapering at their lower ends to points 19 are formed integrally with the cap H on the lower surface and at alternate sides thereof. The notches 18 are cut in the rear end of the pencil shaft C so that when the cap H is cemented thereon the prongs 16 are seated in the notches and the outer faces of the prongs are flush with the surface of the shaft.
