[Also in Group XXIII] An apparatus for use on a lathe for turning a roller D3, such as that used in textile roving and spinning-frames, comprises arms D<SP>2</SP> mounted on a frame A located on the lathe-bed which, in their operative position, hold the roller in contact with a driving-roller D<SP>4</SP> mounted between the lathe head and tail-stocks for frictionally driving the roller D<SP>3</SP> so that its surface may be machined by a turning-tool. The arms D<SP>2</SP> are adjustably secured to a bar D<SP>1</SP> fixed at its ends to levers D mounted on a rod B which is rotatable in bearings a<SP>2</SP> on the frame, and has a handle C secured thereon; a catch c, attached to the handle, engages the frame to retain the arms in their lower, inoperative, position. The roller D<SP>3</SP> is supported by its spindle d<SP>4</SP> on rests d<SP>6</SP> on the arms so that, when the catch c is released, the levers D are upwardly-urged by springs a<SP>3</SP> to cause the roller to engage the roller D4, and the spindle d<SP>4</SP> to engage rollers d<SP>3</SP> on the arms. The turning-tool is then brought into contact with and automatically traversed along the roller D<SP>3</SP> to machine its surface.. A roller without spindle ends may be engaged directly by the rollers d<SP>a</SP>, or a cylinder with bossed ends remain in the rests d<SP>6</SP> of the arms, in which case the rollers-may be dispensed with. An additional guiding-roller may be fitted parallel to the driving-roller D4.
