Abstract

807,207. Mowing machines. TORO MANUFACTURING CORPORATION. June 20, 1957, No. 19468/57. Class 6(3). In a mowing machine, of the type having a horizontal rotary blade 31, the frame is supported at the rear on wheels 6, 8 and at the front on a pair of transverly.spaced saucerlike members 39 having convex groundengaging surfaces 40, and being freely rotatable about axes extending upwardly and inwardly. The frame includes a motor 17 which drives the blade through a belt 26, the working height of the blade being adjustable by the positioning of washers 32 on the blade-shaft 28. The blade is mounted within a downwardly-open cylindrical casing 29, the casing having a lateral discharge aperture 30 and carrying the members 39 by means of brackets 34. Each member has a central part 40 of flattened form and an upturned rim 41 of smaller radius and is mounted on a shaft 38 which is floatingly mounted, against the pressure of a spring 42, within a cup-shaped housing 35 secured to the bracket 34. The axis of rotation of each member 39 is inclined upwardly and inwardly by 20 degrees and upwardly and rearwardly by 15 degrees. The rear of the frame comprises a frame 12 carrying a seat and steering handles 20 and mounted on a single steerable wheel 6 which is rotated by a two-stage gear and chain drive 21, 17 from the steering handles 20. The front-supporting members 39 are mounted within the working-width of the machine to enable the machine to operate close to walls.
