Abstract
A colloidal silicic acid, for use in bonding a glass fibre structure, has an SiO2/alkali ratio 60 : 1 to 130 : 1, a molecular weight greater than 500,000, and viscosity 1.15-1.55 at 10 per cent SiO2 in water at 25 DEG C. The colloidal silicic acid may be used in conjunction with organic resinous binders, e.g. phenol-formaldehyde resin. In Example (3) a composition containing 10-25 per cent "A" Stage phenol-formaldehyde resin and aqueous silicic acid is sprayed on to glass fibres as they pass through a forming hood and form a mat.ALSO:A colloidal silicic acid for use in bonding a glass fibre structure has an SiO2 alkali ratio 60 : 1 to 130 : 1, a molecular weight greater than 500,000, and viscosity 1,15-1,55 at 10 per cent. Si O2 in water at 25 DEG C. The colloidal silicic acid may be used in conjunction with organic resinous binders, e.g. phenol-formaldehyde resin, or inorganic cementitious materials e.g. magnesium oxychloride or oxysulphate, gypsum, plaster of Paris or Portland cement. 1-5 per cent. silicic acid may be used with the inorganic cementitious materials. The coloildal silicic acid may be used with starch, polyvinyl alcohol, a glycol borate, or an organic borate containing amino groups. The silicic acid may be modified by the addition of up to 50 per cent. inorganic earth filler, e.g. calcium carbonate. In examples: (1) a staple glass fibre mat is heat cleaned, saturated with aqueous silicic acid containing 30 per cent. solid, and subjected to heat and pressure, e.g. at 350-600 DEG F.; (2) a phenol-formaldehyde bonded glass fibre mat is treated with a solution of a fatty acid salt of a quaternary ammonium compound, impregnated with an aqueous composition containing 15-30 per cent. silicic acid and 0,2-1 per cent. ammonium alginate, and baked; (3) a composition containing 10-25 per cent. "A" Stage phenolformaldehyde resin and aqueous silicic acid is sprayed onto glass fibres as they pass through a forming hood and form a mat; (4) glass fibres are treated with a mixture of 70 per cent. aqueous silicic acid and 30 per cent. organic borates.
