Abstract
Polyethylene terephthalate is made by polycondensing diglycol terephthalate in the presence of 5-20 per cent by weight of one of the solvents specified in the parent Specification, the reaction temperature not exceeding 245 DEG C. and the polycondensation being completed while maintaining this amount of solvent in the reaction system. The amount of solvent may be maintained by supplying fresh solvent at the rate at which it is distilled off or by recycling the distilled solvent after separation of the solvent. The polyethylene terephthalate containing a small amount of solvent may be spun or cast. In an example, dimethyl terephthalate is re-esterified with ethylene glycol in presence of a zinc acetate-antimony oxide catalyst and the resulting diglycol terephthalate polycondensed in presence of tetrahydronaphthalene. U.S.A. Specification 2,597,643 is referred to.
