Abstract
806,444. Lighting fittings. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES. Ltd. Aug. 28, 1956 [Sept. 9, 1955], No. 25903/55. Classes 75(2) and 75(4) In a lantern especially for street lighting, comprising a supporting member on which a transparent or translucent globe is detachably supported and extends laterally in one direction therefrom, the globe is provided adjacent the end of the support member with internal thickened portions traversed by horizontally disposed pins one near the top and one near the bottom which engage in slots in the supporting member, at least the upper slot being open ended. In the form shown, a sodium lamp 10 is carried by a cap 12 of aluminiumsilicon alloy secured by spring clips 14 to the end of a globe 13 of acrylic resin, a sealing gasket 15 being provided between the cap and the globe. The globe has thickened portions 18, 19 carrying pins 20, 21 engaging in slots in the supporting member 16, the upper slots being shallower than the lower so that the globe can be raised until the pins 20 clear the upper slot and then hinged downwards on the pins 21. By further raising the globe so that the pins 21 clear the lower slots, the globe can be completely removed. The cap 12 is provided with a cylindrical fin 28 providing a heat deflecting shield for the globe. A bolt 24 passes through the supporting member 16 and is threaded into the cap 12. The globe may be provided internally with light controlling prisms. The supporting member 16 has a tapered socket 17 by which it can be secured to the support.
