Abstract

Latex is compounded in a continuous process with carbon black and other compounding ingredients, e.g. clay, zinc oxide, and sulphur, by continuously forming a mixture of carbon black, individually prepared and milled colloidal dispersions in liquid media of the other compounding ingredients, and, if desired, a mineral oil <PICT:0806362/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0806362/IV (a)/2> compounded latex with a coagulating agent to form crumb rubber. Fig. 1 illustrates an apparatus for carrying out the process in which powdered carbon black is fed via hoppers 33, 34 and a screw conveyer 35 to a mixer 32, to which colloidal dispersions of other compounding ingredients are supplied by metering pumps 24, 25, 26 through pipes 27, 28, 30. The mixture passes from the mixer 32 and through a colloid mill 41 to a mixer 43 to which latex is fed by a pump 46 via a pipe 47, and the resulting mixture passes to a homogenizer 57 and thence via a pipe 52 to a coagulating apparatus 55 to which dilute sulphuric acid is fed by a pump 54 via a pipe 53. A suspension of rubber crumbs is discharged at the outlet. The carbon black extender, milling the mixture to form a colloidal dispersion, and incorporating the latter in the latex to form a homogeneous mixture. The process may also include the treatment of the may alternatively be added as a liquid dispersion to the colloidal dispersions of the other compounding ingredients. The coagulating apparatus 55 comprises a housing 57 in which the homogenized latex mixture is mixed with sulphuric acid supplied through an inlet 77 and is fed by a screw 58 into a housing 67. In the latter the mixture passes through apertures 70 in fixed plates 68 and is acted upon by rotors 71 having radial blades, so that the coagulum is discharged at the outlet 78 as rubber crumb which may be separated from the liquid by filtering. A jacket 80 is provided around the housing 57 and piping 81 adjacent the housing 67 for the flow of a temperature-controlling fluid.
