Butter or the like is spread on bread or the like placde under a device comprising a butter container 1 provided with wheels 3 for movement to and fro on a flat track, table or the like, and containing pressing means 10, 12 for pushing the butter down on to a spreader 8 that is rotated by said wheels, in a slot 7 in the floor 6 of the container, about a horizontal axis perpendicular to the direction of motion of the device. As shown the container comprises a box consisting of a lid 2 telescopically engaged on a body 1 having an axle 4 carrying wheels 3 journalled on opposite ends so that the box can be moved by grasping a handle 5 on lid 1. Spreader 8 is fluted and the butter is pressed down on to it by a plate 10 biased by coil springs 12 engaged between lid 1 and plate 10. The track 14 has parallel channels 15 containing rigid strip tracks 16 having flexible treads 18 and supported by springs 17. The tops of channel 15 have inwardly directed flanges 19 and the inner sides also have outwardly directed flanges 20 which provide retaining means for a flexible pad 21 resting between the tracks 16. The lid may be held on the body by catches 22 which are pivoted to the lid at 23, have U-shaped parts 26 spanning the axle 4 and have free ends 24 which snap into grooves 25 in the lid. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the wheels 3 and tracks 6 form a rack and pinion arrangement.
