Abstract

<PICT:0804229/III/1> In a vapour-condensing assembly, for a fractionating column 1, the condenser 3 is mounted above the condensate-receiver 8, the condensate-conduit 4 dips below the surface of the liquid in the receiver and is provided with a flow-control valve 5 which is actuated by an element 6 responsive to pressure-variations in the vapour-line 2, and the vapour-space of receiver 8 is connected by a pressure-equalizing line 21 to the vapour-line 2. The upper part of the column, the condenser and the receiver are thereby maintained at substantially the same pressure, so that low pressures may be maintained in the column without difficulty. In normal operation, the pressure-fluctuations in lind 2 effect adjustment of the opening of valve 5, but the arrangement is such that some of the cooling surface of condenser 3 is always covered with liquid. The liquid withdrawn from the base of receiver 8 through line 9 is pumped through line 11, and some of it is passed through line 12 to serve as reflux in the column, while the remainder is discharged as product through line 13 which is controlled by valve 14. When the overhead vapour is totally condensed, the liquid level in receiver 8 is controlled by element 15 which actuates valve 14. When it is desired to recover part of the product in the form of vapour, valve 20 in line 17 is opened. In this case, the liquid level in receiver 8 is controlled by the rate of vapour withdrawal; element 15 being connected to valve 18 instead of valve 14. Reference is made to the fractionation of a hydrocarbon mixture which contains ethane and hexane.
