Abstract

Weakly basic anion-exchange resins comprising cross-linked polystyrene with tertiary amine groups, e.g. benzyl dimethylamine at the exchange position, and containing a proportion of strongly basic quaternary ammonium groups are treated with a strong base such as sodium or potassium hydroxide to convert the strongly basic groups to the hydroxyl form, and subsequently heated the resin to substantially 100 DEG C., preferably under reduced pressure, to diminish the proportion of strongly basic groups in the resin. The Provisional Specification describes also the treatment of cross-linked polystyrene containing benzyl dimethylamine groups, swollen in dioxane, with methyl iodide.
