Abstract

799,979. Making bearing washers; sheet metal joints. VANDERVELL PRODUCTS, Ltd. Dec. 24, 1954 [Jan. 11, 1954], No. 731/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of securing two metal parts together face to face comprises shearing a piece of metal partially out of one part to form on the face of the parts a parallel-sided projection having a length less than the thickness of the other part, forming an aperture in the other part corresponding in shape and position with said projection and having a depth greater than the length of said projection, bringing the two parts together face to face with the projection on the one part engaged on the aperture in the other part, and subjecting the other part to compression in a direction perpendicular to the mating faces of the parts to cause the walls of the aperture to move inwardly into tripping engagemeng with the sides of the projection. An annular bimetallic blank 1 composed of babbitt or lead bronze bearing metal 3 backed with a layer of steel 2 is placed on a die 4 having a pair of cylindrical holes 5. Co-operating with this die is a punch 6 having a pair of cylindrical projections 7 and 8 on its lower face. A spring- loaded stripper plate 9 passes over these projections. The projection 7 is of sufficient length to shear a hole 11 in the blank and the other projection 8 only penetrates through half the blank thickness to produce a cylindrical projection 12 on the lower steel face of the blank. The projection 12 is slightly larger in diameter than the hole 11 and a pair of blanks are assembled with the projection of each blank registering with the hole 11 in the other blank. The assembled blanks are then placed in a press and compressed to lock the blanks together to form the double-faced bearing washer as shown in Fig. 4. If the projection 12 passes through the other blank the protruding end is riveted over but if the face towards which the projection extends is a bearing surface the riveted portion must be below such bearing surface. Three or more parts may be joined together such as a light alloy or steel spacing sleeve 14 provided with annular bimetallic bearing surfaces 16 at each end as shown in Fig. 5.
