Abstract
796,806. Universal joints; shaft couplings. GELENKWELLENBAU GES. Nov. 9, 1956 [Aug. 23, 1956], No. 34280/56. Class 80 (2). Means for lubricating and sealing a telescopic spline coupling 2, 3 between a universal joint 1 and propeller shaft 5 comprises a sleeve 6 attached to the shaft 5 as shown, or to the inner splined member 3, and extending over both the splined members to form a grease reservoir 10 communicating with a central bore 12 in the inner splined member 3, and sealed by rings 7, 9 on the sleeve and member 2 or (Fig. 2, not shown), by two piston-rings on the member 2. In Fig. 3, a piston 14, loaded by a spring 15, forces grease out of the bore 12 through drilled passages 26 to the splines and space 10 as required, and also through passages in a seating ball 22 to drilled trunnions 21 of the universal joint cross. Charge nipples may be provided at 11 or 11a. In Fig. 1, not shown, cross lubrication is omitted and the piston is loaded towards the propeller shaft 5 by a spring reacting on a closure disc of the outer shaft member 2. A drilled passage directly connects the bore 12 and space 10.
