Abstract

796,166. Winches. THOMPSON BROS. (ENGINEERS), Ltd., and THOMPSON, R. W. July 4, 1956 [Aug. 5, 1955], No. 22633/55. Class 78 (5). A winch comprises a freely revoluble ratchet 8 associated with a power input shaft 1, a pawl 14 which engages said ratchet in the freewheeling sense on winding in the rope on to the winch drum 5A and a brake 10 operating as a constantly-acting friction load-controlling clutch between the ratchet and the said shaft whereby the load on the rope slips slowly downwards if said load exceeds a predetermined value. As shown, the -winch drum 5A is driven from handle 2 through shaft 1 and gears and 4. Shaft 1 carries sleeve 7 integral therewith and sleeve 7 carries ratchet 8 confined between abutment 7a of the sleeve 7 and plate 10 slidably urged by spring 11, friction linings 9, 9a being provided, and ratchet 8 being engaged by the pawl 14. Normally ratchet 8 rotates with shaft 1 and the pawl 14 co-operates therewith and prevents the fall of the load. However, when the load exceeds a predetermined value the slip occurs and the load slips slowly downwards to the ground.
