Abstract

Sintered metal articles (e.g. steel or bronze) are coated by being brought into contact with a melt of easily fusible metal (Pb, Sn, Zn( Sb, Cd, Bi, or mixtures or alloys thereof such as Wood's metal) which closes the pores, freed of surplus fusible metal (as by centrifuging) to leave a layer preferably of the order of 0.015 mm. in thickness, whereupon an electro-desposition e.g. of Ni and/or Cr is made directly on said layer. The sintered body may be dipped into flux and then into the melt, or coated with a mixture of flux and powdered fusible metal with or without glycerine and heated until the said metal melts; after cooling the surface may be cleaned with fine emery or the like and then directly bright nickelled. Pickling is not necessary if treatment with the melt occurs shortly after sintering, whilst the easily fusible metal should preferably be one melting below 425 DEG C. Four Examples showing the details of this process are included in the Specification.
