Abstract

A nuclear fuel element (or fertile element) comprises sintered uranium or thorium enclosed in an envelope of a sintered heat conductive material of small neutron capture cross-section and high melting point, such as beryllium or zirconium. The materials may be metallic powders or flakes or in the form of oxides or carbides. Rings of sintered beryllium are assembled in a mould with a beryllium disc at one end and pressed to form a cylinder. Cylindrical pellets of sintered uranium of slightly less diameter than the internal diameter of the rings are inserted the filled cylinder is subjected to heat and pressure and a second beryllium disc is hot pressed to close the cylinder. Aluminium powder may be mixed with the beryllium powder to lower the sintering temperature, and the sintering may be performed in an atmosphere produced by addition of paraffin or petroleum oil to the particles. The elements, instead of being cylindrical may be tubular, of star-shaped cross-section, or prismatic or they may have radial fins.
