Abstract

786,855. Piling textile tows. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 29, 1955 [July 16, 1954], No. 20768/54. Class 120(3) A tow of filaments is laid in a stationary container by first being fed on to an advancing reel that carries loops of tow by means of radially projecting wheels or bars which pass the tow along the reel to drop off into the container. In one embodiment, tow is passed through a tube 30, the introduction being assisted by an air jet. and laid on the reel 33 so that the coils are held by the teeth of wheels 40, 41. Six similar wheels are radially arranged round a worm gear 39 on a shaft 38 rotatable with the tube 30 and are rotated by the shaft to lower the coils of tow until they fall off into a container. The reel 33 is preferably constrained from rotating with the shaft 38 by gearing comprising a stationary toothed annulus 34, planet wheels 35, 36 keyed on a shaft 47 and a gear wheel 37 attached to the reel 33. By suitable choice of gear ratios, the reel 33 may remain stationary or rotate slowly in either direction. By attaching the device to a pantograph mechanism the coils of tow may be laid in the container in a variety of patterns permitting later removal without tangling. Another form of reel rotates around a stationary shaft and toothed radially - arranged wheels gear with a worm on the stationary shaft. The reel is surrounded by a tubular deflector plate with a slot in the top which permits laying of the two on the toothed wheels. If the reel must haul tow from a fixed speed machine, it may be driven by a compressed air motor or constant torque electric motor. A constant speed electric motor may be used if tow is available at an unlimited speed.
