Abstract
785,409. Stuffing-box substitutes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 30, 1955 [Jan. 14, 1955], No. 37447/55. Class 122 (5). A movable rod 3 is sealed where it extends through an aperture 2 in the wall of a vacuum chamber 1 by a tubular structure 4 that surrounds the rod with a small clearance and is connected at one or positions along its length, to extracting means for removing leakage air or gas. The structure is formed by elements 5, 8, 13 and Y having small clearances 6, 9, 14 and Z respectively with the rod 3 adjacent elements being separated by annular chambers 7, 11 and W each connected by a conduit to a source of vacuum. The invention is stated to be particularly applicable to sealing the hot ingot extra cted from, or the con - sumable electrode fed into, the vacuum furnace of a continuous casting process.
