Abstract
Aluminium nitride is produced by heating in an atmosphere of nitrogen a mixture of powdered aluminium of at least 99.9 per cent purity and a catalyst consisting of an alkali metal fluoride or nitrite, in particular potassium hydrogen fluoride, to a temperature below the melting-point of aluminium until reaction sets in and then raising the temperature above the melting-point of aluminium to complete the reaction. Potassium hydrogen fluoride may be employed in an amount of 1-5 per cent of the aluminium nitride produced. The mixture of aluminium and catalyst may be heated to 600 DEG C. for an hour, then to 700 DEG C. at which temperature the nitrogen atmosphere is renewed, then to 800 DEG C. when reaction proceeds vigorously, and finally to 1000 DEG C. for 2-3 hours, to complete the reaction. The mixture may be supported on trays of nickel coated with alumina which are carried by a stainless steel cage in a cylindrical stainless steel reaction vessel which is heated in an electric furnace.
