Abstract

A polymerizable mixture consists of (A) a copolymer of one or more a ,b -unsaturated carboxylic acids or anhydrides with one or more different compounds containing CH2=C< and (B) one or more substances with the general formula <FORM:0773206/IV(a)/1> in which m=1, 2 or 3; n=0, 1 or 2; X is a halogen; Y is H, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, amino, hydrocarbon substituted amino, or OR11 where R11 is alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl; and G is a substituent of the general formula <FORM:0773206/IV(a)/2> in which U is alkylene and Z is H or alkyl, the total number of carbon atoms in G not exceeding 10. When the non-acid ingredient of (A) is other than an alkyl ester of an a ,b -unsaturated carboxylic acid, the copolymer (A) may include a third ingredient which is such an ester. Copolymer (A) preferably has an acid number of at least 15, e.g. between 25 and 100. The weight ratio of (A) to (B) is preferably between 95:5 and 60:40. Copolymer (A) may be formed in an inert solvent and reacted with (B) in an inert solvent. The Specification lists a number of suitable solvents. Components (B) and their preparation are described and claimed in Specification 755,468. A list of suitable substances is given in the Specification. Suitable acids for component (A) are acrylic, crotonic, isocrotonic, methacrylic, fumaric, glutaconic, maleic, citraconic and itaconic. The second ingredient of component (A) may be styrene; a -methyl-, ethyl- or chlorostyrene; o, m, or p-alkyl or halo styrene; poly-alkyl styrene; acrylonitrile; methacrylonitrile; ethacrylonitrile; allyl alcohol; allyl or polyallyl esters; or alkyl esters of a ,b -unsaturated carboxylic acids. Many specific substances are mentioned. Several specific alkyl esters of a ,b -unsaturated carboxylic acids are also mentioned as optional third ingredients of component (A). Any conventional polymerization catalyst may be used in the preparation of component (A). A number of peroxide catalysts are mentioned. In Examples 1-8 the triazine derivative used is triglycidyl cyanurate and films are formed from its reaction product with a copolymer prepared with cumene hydroperoxide as catalyst from (1)-(4) acrylic acid, styrene and butyl acrylate in amyl acetate; (5) and (6) acrylic acid, styrene and butyl acrylate in methyl "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark); (7) maleic anhydride, styrene and acrylonitrile in xylol-butanol mixture; (8) acrylic acid, styrene and acrylonitrile in xylol-butanol. In Example (9) a copolymer of acylic acid and methyl isobutyl carbinyl acrylate is heated with glycidyl cyanurate. In Example (10) a copolymer of methacrylic acid, styrene and n-hexyl methacrylate is used with mixed glycidyl cyanurates containing each 60 per cent of the epoxy oxygen in triglycidyl cyanurate. In Examples (11) and (12) the copolymer of Example (5) is used with 2,4 - diglycidyl - 6 - p - tertiarybutylphenoxy-s-triazine, and 2-amino-4-glycidyl-6-dibutyl-amino-s-triazine respectively.
