Abstract
773,108. Rolling. AKTIEBOLAGET SVENSKA METALLVERKEN. June 22, 1955 [June 24, 1954], No. 18078/55. Class 83 (4). In a continuous wire-rolling mill the wire is rapidly cooled prior to a cold-rolling stage by a cooling medium pumped at high pressure into a series of open-ended tubes 4, Fig. 2, through which the wire passes and which have a diameter only slightly larger than the wire so that the wire is covered with a jacket of cooling medium. Pipes 5, 6 supplying water or oil emulsion, are led into the tubes 4 at one end and are arranged so that the medium is directed into a helical path around the work. The tubes 4 are supported in a jacket 7, Fig. 3, which collects the medium. The supports comprise frames 11 connected to fittings 14 on the pipes by spring- loaded ball joints 13 which permit the tubes 4 to jump out of position in the event of the wire becoming jammed.
