Abstract

772,405. Garage lifts. JOYCE-CRIDLAND CO. Sept. 7,1955 [Sept. 9, 1954], No. 25594/55. Class 78 (3). A pair of vertical lifting rams 10, 11 of a garage lift are normally prevented from lowering by a pawl 44 which is urged by a counterweight 46 into engagement with a rack 32 carried by a vehicle engaging plate 20, but which is adapted to be released from the rack by upward movement of a pedal 52 mounted flush with the floor 12. The pawl mechanism is located in a housing 22 which is secured to the upper end of the cylinder of ram 10, and in which is journalled one end of a ram synchronizing shaft 34 which carries a pair of pinions 36 meshing with rack 32 and a further rack 32a carried by vehicle engaging plate 20a. The pedal is arranged directly beneath plate 20 so that when the lift is fully lowered this plate engages the pedal and automatically moves pawl 44 to its locking position. In a.modification (Fig. 4) the invention is applied to a single ram lift in which a rack 70 secured to member 66 slides in a housing 72 containing a pawl-andpedal mechanism similar to that shown in Fig. 2.
