Abstract

770,001. Shaping filled bags. MEDWAY PAPER SACKS, Ltd. Aug. 8, 1955 [May 10, 1954], No. 13592/54. Class 94(1). Apparatus for flattening and shaping filled bags comprises an endless conveyer 4 which feeds the bags bottom first between adjustable side guides 24 and beneath pressure-applying mechanism 8 which exerts maximum pressure at the centre of the conveyer and decreasing pressure towards its edges, or vice versa, so that the contents of each bag are distributed transversely and urged towards the top end of the bag. The mechanism 8 comprises rollers of varying diameter rotatable on a, shaft 22 carried by brackets 18 which are adjustable vertically by nuts 20 on threaded shafts 12 which are journalled in a frame cross-member 11 and rotatable simultaneously through chain and sprocket gearing by a hand wheel 16. The brackets may move upwardly relative to the nuts against the action of springs 21 if an oversize bag passes beneath the rollers. After passing beneath the rollers the bags are further flattened by mechanism of known type comprising an adjustably-mounted endless belt 10 which is driven at the same speed as the conveyer 4. Portions of the latter in advance of the rollers 8 and between the rollers 8 and belt 10 are unsupported, or the conveyer-supporting rollers 5 are lowered where indicated at 5<SP>1</SP> and 511, to allow the conveyer to accommodate downward bulging of the lower surface of the bags.
