Abstract
778,256. Treating microscopical specimens. TECHNICON INTERNATIONAL, Ltd. March 1. 1955 [April 14, 1954; Dec. 9, 1954], No. 6093/55. Class 97(1) In a method of treating solid animal tissue with processing liquids, prior to microscopical examination thereof, moist tissue is placed in contact with a porous surface of a tissue carrier to which it naturally adheres. Preferably, the tissue is contained in a covered receptacle, the cover of which carries the tissue on the internal porous surface thereof. Coagulation of the albumin in the tissue by a fixative, such as formaldehyde forms a releasable bond between the tissue and the fibres of the porous material. The porous surface layer of the cover may be perforated to provide access of the processing liquids to the underside of the tissue. As shown, the tissues 49 are attached to layers 46 of the covers of the receptacles which are blotting surface layers of an ink blotter having non-porous upper layers 48 of sized or calendered paper joined thereto. Holes 22 may be provided in the sides as well as in the bottoms 20 of the receptacles. The body portion of the receptacle is preferably non-metallic and may be made of plastic, papier machÚ or pressed paper. The lower peripheral edges of the side walls of the receptacles may be corrugated so that the bottom 20 of each is not in contact with the cover of the receptacle below and, the liquid may thus flow laterally out of the space between the receptacles. A carrier for supporting the receptacles in the beakers of a processing machine by means of apertured lugs which are provided on the rims 28 of the receptacles, is described. The receptacles may also be placed in the more usual basket type carrier, in which case, the lugs are torn off along a score line provided therefor. The covers may each consist only of a single layer of material, (Fig. 10, not shown) and its periphery may be slotted to provide flexibility. An integral tab may extend through a gap in the rim 28 of the receptacle. Since the tissue may accidentally become detached, for small specimens, the cover is provided with only small apertures and slots and a paper disc having similarly reduced apertures is used to line the perforated bottom 20 of the receptacle. A perforated rectangular strip of paper may be folded along scored lines to divide the enclosed space of the receptacle into two or three compartments. Specification 697,162 is referred to.
