Abstract
774,311. Breaking-up iron oxide. NEWTON, CHAMBERS & CO., Ltd. Oct. 24, 1955 [Sept. 21, 1954], No. 27309/54. Class 59 [Also in Group XII] In breaking up and removing iron oxide from a container 1, Fig. 1, the container 1 is mounted on a turntable 5 rotating on rollers 7 and the surface of the oxide is engaged by cutting teeth 25, the broken oxide being carried away by an elevator 27. A hollow boom 19 open at its lower end carries both the teeth 25 and a bucket elevator 27 driven through reduction gearing from an electric motor 29, the oxide being discharged into a fixed shoot 37. The boom 19 is movable about a horizontal axis 17 by means of a handle 23 rotating a nut engaging a threaded stay 21 and is mounted on a table 11 which is rotatable about a vertical axis on a structure 9 by means of a rack 15, Fig. 3, and pinion 16, the latter being driven through an electric motor 13. After turning handle 23 to allow teeth 25 to engage the oxide, the turntable 5 is rotated and table 11 moved so that the boom traverses the annular container 1. At the end of its travel the boom is lowered and swung back towards the central tube 3 and so on. The final layer of oxide is manually shovelled into the opening 33 in the lower end of the boom 19, the opening near teeth 25 being closed by a sliding plate. The shoot 37 may lead the oxide below tube 3 on its way to a dump. In another form, the boom 19 does not turn in a vertical plane and the turntable 5 is vertically movable. In a modification, the teeth 25 are omitted and teeth are provided on the elevator buckets.
