Elements for the manufacture of edge filters or sieves wherein the material being filtered or sieved flows over the element faces from one edge to another have grooves on the two faces extending diagonally, the grooves on one face extending in a direction crossing the grooves on the opposite face. Metal or, preferably, plastic material may be used. A strip may be passed between two rollers in the peripheries of which oblique teeth of appropriate section have been cut, at an angle of 45 degrees to the edge of the strip on one roller and at the same angle in the opposite direction on the other roller. The distance between adjacent teeth may be equal to the groove depth, e.g., 1 mm. Alternatively the grooves may have a semi-circular or other cross-section. Strips 5 with triangular grooves oppositely inclined on opposite faces may be stacked removably (for cleaning) in a frame 6, Fig. 6. The strips may have drainage or entry holes, aligned in the complete unit. The width and depth of the grooves may both increase in the direction of filtration, Figs. 7 and 8. Flat rings or rectangular frames with grooves on one face perpendicular to those on the opposite face maybe stacked and clamped axially to form a filter candle for inward flow. A strip of the kind shown at 5, in Fig. 6, may be wound upon itself to form a filter " biscuit," Fig. 11, through which filtration takes place from one face to the other.
