Abstract
Synthetic rubber is prepared by polymerizing in aqueous emulsion a monomeric mixture comprising between 50-95 per cent of a conjugated diene, the remainder being a vinyl aromatic compound, in the presence of a Redox polymerization system at below 15 DEG C., using as a peroxidic catalyst in the redox system an a ,a 1 aromatic hydroxy hydroperoxide. Specified dienes are butadiene, 2-ethyl- and 1,3-dimethyl-butadiene, pentadiene-1,3, 3-methyl- and 3,4-dimethyl-pentadiene-2,4, and 3-furyl butadiene, while specified vinyl aromatic compounds are styrene, mono- and di-methyl styrenes, ethyl and isopropyl styrenes and vinyl naphthalenes. The hydroperoxides have the formula <FORM:0766562/IV(a)/1> and the corresponding metaisomers, the R's being the same or different, and representing alkyl groups of not more than 4 carbon atoms. The preferred compounds are m- and p - a - hydroxy - a 1 - hydroperoxy - di - isopropylbenzene. It is preferred that the diene comprises 70-85 per cent of the monomeric mixture and that the polymerization takes place at 2-8 DEG C. Specified emulsifying agents are potassium myristate and the disproportionated potassium rosin soaps. Specified optional additions are dodecyl mercaptan, ferrous sulphate, potassium chloride, and diethylene triamine.
