Abstract
In a process of coating a plastic material, e.g. P.T.F.E. or thermosetting plastics such as silicon resins, with metal, the plastic in powder, granulated or other finely divided state is compressed to form a block, sheet or other preformed shape, the shaped material is surfaced with a metallic coating so as to cause the metal to key into the spaces between the plastic particles, the coated material is further compressed to mould it more closely to the required dimensions and is then heattreated. The metal may be copper or brass and it may serve as a base for further coatings, applied by soldering or electroplating, of the same or different metals. Metallized P.T.F.E. electrical bushings may be made by forming the powdered P.T.F.E. in a press, coating with metal by sputtering, vaporization or spraying, applying further compression, heating at 320 DEG -400 DEG C., preferably 327 DEG C., and allowing the block to cool under pressure in the mould. The process may also be applied to the manufacture of printed circuits, resistors, coils, capacitances and base membars for thermionic valves. Specification 649,593 [Group XXXVI] is referred to.
